Covid-19 – Essentials of Face Masks | Ingredients, Uses and Benefits

As the saying goes, All that glitters is not gold. In a similar vein,  eye- catching and exotic  things ain’t always better. We do every possible effort to make our skin look the best and in this fixation we obsessively tend to do all we can to get that glowing and healthy skin. In all this craze  about self care, face masks have probably won and emerged number one. Recently face masks have found a multitude of uses be it as anxiety reliever, stress reliever or just maintaining a healthy skin care routine. There is nothing it cannot help in, right?

It has becoming a blessing for lads and lasses to get that glowy, hydrated and blissful skin. There is an array of face masks available in the market and it becomes tricky sometimes to find the one that suits your skin tone. Here I present to you the various face masks available , their uses and essentials you must look for while buying face masks. But prior to applying any face mask, make it sure you’re your face is clean , remove makeup  or dirt, if any.

So here we go :

Sheet masks (or Korean face masks)

These masks help in soothing the skin particularly if the skin is sensitive, sore, irritated or inflamed. Such masks are hydrating as well as they augment the absorption of moisturizer thoroughly with the help of paper. These are suitable for all skin types and are much helpful when sealed with your moisturiser or serum straight away after applying the mask.

Cream masks

These masks are ideal for normal to dry skin and help in getting rid of definite skin complaints and issues such as acne or wrinkles. These seep deep into skin and replenish the dry cells.

So what should you look for when picking out a face mask?

Clay masks

This mask is quite popular nowadays. It is ideal for normal to oily skin. It detoxifies the skin and tightens it as well.

Gel masks

This mask works well for dry and sensitive skin as it has a soothing and cooling effect on the skin. These masks are infused with collagen and antioxidants and help the skin to recover.

Exfoliating masks

These masks help in exfoliating the dry cells and dead skin. They have skin brightening properties as well and give your skin that healthy glow. It also leaves the skin free of dirt and thus helpful in enhancing moisture absorbing properties of your skin. Make it a point to apply a moisturiser soon after using this mask.

Dermatolgists recommend using the products suitable for your skin type and reading the ingredients properly before using it. There is always the risk of being allergic to certain constituents and damaging the skin.

Now that you know the different types of face masks and their uses. Let us see what face masks are best for your skin.

Tip : Always look at the label before buying one.

Here is a list of ingredients you should look for :

Oily skin  : salicylic acid.

Acne & blemishes: salicylic acid and alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs).

Dry skin: hyaluronic acid.
Dark spots & pigmentation: soy, kojic acid, and licorice root extract.

Fine lines: anti-oxidants like vitamin C, vitamin E,     resveratrol, and ferulic acid.

What about DIY face masks?

There are some do- it- yourself face masks you can readily use at home and are quite beneficial. These include aloe vera mask ( it has vitamins A, B, C, E and helps skin look glowy), Papaya mask ( brightens the skin), Coffee mask ( minimizes the pores and exfoliates the skin as well)

Tip: Always do a patch test first.

So, now you are acquainted with the face masks, their ingredients, and how they work. You can choose a readily available face mask or use a homemade mask. The choice is entirely yours.

With the current lifestyle and fast track routine, we should always have some knowledge about how to maintain your skincare routine at home and the same goes for face. Now let us look at how you can make some DIY masks and use them for glowing healthy skin.

SIMPLE DIY FACE MASKS

EASY SOOTHING MASK

What do you require :

  • 2 tsp of  raw honey
  • 1 tsp aloe vera gel
  • 1-2 drops of essential oil  (as per your skin type)

Give a good mix and apply. Leave on for 10-15 minutes. Rinse off with warm water. This mask works well for all skin types. It soothes your skin and refreshes it.

YOGURT MASK FOR OILY OR ACNE-PRONE SKIN

  • 1/4 cup plain yogurt
  • 2-3 drops of essential oil for your skin type

Apply to your face and let it sit for 15-20 minutes.  Wash off with warm water.  Milk nurtures the skin and yogurt help to hydrate it, assuage irritation & redness.

HYDRATING AVOCADO AND HONEY MASK

  • 1/2 avocado ( smash it)
  • 1 tbsp raw honey
  • 1 tbsp aloe vera gel
  • 2-3 drops of essential oil for your skin type

Combine all ingredients and apply to face.  Allow to sit for 15 minutes.  Wash it with warm water.  Honey cleanses and heals the skin.  Avocado is laden with vitamins and minerals that deeply nourish the skin.

ROSE FACE MASK

  • 1 tbsp rose water
  • 1 tbsp raw honey
  • 1 tbsp plain yogurt
  • 2-3 drops of essential oil for your skin type

Combine all the ingredients and apply it to your face.  Allow to sit for 15 minutes.  Wash it off with warm water.  Rose is anti-inflammatory, soothes irritated skin and also a rich supply of antioxidants, which  help support skin cells and rejuvenate damaged skin.

NOTE:

If you do not have the essential oil at your place, you can skip it. The mask will still enrich your skin and replenish it.

These masks help the constituent ingredients seep deeper into the skin, hydrate your skin and let the skin replenish and soothe. These work wonders for an impromptu party or an unplanned get together to get that glowy and supple skin.
